Ugh my news section just got spammed. If you're going to use a bot please at the very least make it buy things all at once instead of...this...

Two thoughts:
First, Ball will tell you he did you a favor by helping you keep better records.
Second, if he was buying all at once, he wouldn't have the bots. That is the whole point. They allow him to cheat time as you and I are capable of playing through it. Now that Scott is again lost in the woods, I fear it will embolden the bot cheaters, and further ruin what is left of this community.

Don't get me started. It is one of the main reasons this game has deteriorated so badly. No one wants to play against bots.

don't you mean the game is at a virtual standstill? and atm not worth any real time or energy?

not to say it isn't worth time just really needs to be fixed.

That is also true, but not what I meant. What I meant is that the game has deteriorated in large part due to the fiasco over bots. Even before Scott disappeared into the ozone of irresponsibility, bots were destroying the game, and people were leaving because of it. And they are now invading again at a level not seen since Scott knocked down BallC. That is what I meant. But I concede that your view is also somewhat true, if sugar coated a bit.

Imagine this, you work 24/7 whenever you are awake and mostly ignoring everything else in life, all to create this idea you have in your head of a great game, you make many friends in helping you develop and test, you expand/advertise to see the game work on a larger scale, then the boom happens, the cheaters come in, the absurd, the extreme, the rude, yet your not really willing to get help from mods,.......I could go on but it's looking like quite possibly If I were Scott, I would have been upset and stepped away and my thoughts would be, Kill, game : Reset, game : re-design, security :

He might be in hiding to work un-interrupted at a complete re-structure, including bot prevention, i.e. something similar to the way bots are detected in myspace games.

He might be depressed, I know I would be.

Point is I don't know but I do know his utter excitement about the dev. of this game was amazing he would have very little sleep on a regular basis and still be in a great mood I think the start of it all was partly when we me and a few others begged for chat, that really wound up hurting things, anyway i'm rambling point is he's maybe depressed maybe feeling a little un-appreciated, and I think ultimately, he will see this game to completion his determination has proved to be excellent in the past and his standards high.

One last thought, responsibility would be if this were a pay-play game this is a free game, the servers are still hosing it, therefore his responsibility level can really be whatever he wants it to be..... at least he's keeping it alive while he takes his hiatus ....

Well, one way to reduce the effectiveness of bots is to create a soft timer on transactions. As an example:

After you make a transaction, there's a 30 second delay before you can make another transaction of any type, and a 1 minute delay before you can make a transaction of the same type. If you choose to ignore this transaction delay, there is a fee attached to the transaction based on how much time elapsed.

I buy oranges, and realize that deal is really, really good and want to buy all the rest of them. If I buy more of anything in the next 30 seconds, I pay a % fee that gets higher the faster I buy. If I buy more oranges within the next 60 seconds, then I pay the same sliding scale fee.

This makes rapid transactions expensive. It won't stop bots from cherrypicking good deals, but it will keep them from blitzing sales.

It actually makes sense from a business point of view. Expedited orders cost more. You will pay more for lots of little packages as opposed to big packages. Your order handling staff can only do so much before they start having to get paid overtime, better pay, or bonuses.

One word "capcha" :) would help but could become a major annoyance.

but penalizing rapid purchases would be rude to those playing at whatever speed they can click/type so if a user is efficient he's penalized, however bots can usually be set for timeouts, and randomization of time outs. captcha's definitely stop most bots..... it's all give and take. I just feel anything that would hurt legit transactions should be avoided.

Are there any people around that don't want to waste their coding skills on bots, but rather hack the game, and get admin rights to punish the bots?

Simple captcha... 1 letter or numeral

Find a way to randomize the background of the captcha to prevent the bot from OCR'ing it

It wouldnt take long for the general population (whatever remains) to aclimitize to typing an extra number beside their order

Are we still blaming this on bots.... puleeeez.

It's all speculation as to why Scott stopped. It could just as likely be people's bitching about bots as the bots themselves or, more likely, the reality that MOST projects fail because MOST people don't have the wherewithal to stick with them.

a hard cooldown period would thrown a wrench into reliably trading between ones privately-held companies at cost. ironically, this approach would give bots a big advantage in this case, as they can be vigilant --- in a way no human player realisitically could be --- in continuously monitoring for such "deals", which only exist for the short time between listing with one company and purchasing with the other (it takes several seconds to switch companies and click over to the B2B page).

i've actually been interrupted mid-trade a few times by interlopers, although to be honest, i suspect it's just lucky human players and not bots. it's very annoying when it happens, but given the game''s quirks and general functional incompleteness, one must become inured to such random losses as a "cost of doing business".

We went from over 400 players to under 200 players during the reign of the bots. The major complaints were all the same, and remain on these threads to be seen...Bots, and Scott's refusal to outlaw them.

Who wants to play with bots in a competitive environment? I don't.

The main reason I'm still here is because I'm playing against myself now. I don't even look at rankings anymore.
